Start with your own usage
Review your phone’s data usage and identify the apps you rely on when away from home. Navigation, messages, video, cloud uploads and laptop sharing create different needs. A past billing period is a starting point, not a promise for the next trip. Write down what will change while travelling: longer time outside Wi-Fi, more photos, or less video streaming can all affect the plan you should compare.
Budget for the whole trip
Choose an estimated daily allowance, multiply it by the days you expect to use mobile data and leave room for uncertainty. Treat the result as your planning estimate rather than a measured forecast. Then compare real packages that cover both the total allowance and the trip duration. A large data bundle with a validity period shorter than your stay does not solve the whole-trip requirement on its own.
Include every connected device
If a laptop or another traveller will use your phone’s hotspot, include that traffic in the budget and check that sharing is permitted by the selected plan. A phone-only allowance may feel very different when it also handles computer updates or work calls. Ask about hotspot limits separately from the advertised mobile-data allowance. If a specific daily sharing amount matters, find it in the package details before purchasing.
Plan what happens if you run low
Check the provider’s balance display, top-up options and instructions before the trip. Monitor usage during the first few days and adjust activities or buy additional service while you still have a connection. Download useful maps and documents ahead of time where the relevant apps allow it. A smaller initial purchase is only a practical strategy when you know how, and whether, you can add more data later.
