Keep your phone number with a travel eSIM

Use a travel eSIM for data while deciding whether to keep your home SIM available for calls, SMS and verification codes.

What to check

Keep the number and the data connection separate

Buying a data-only travel eSIM does not move your existing phone number to another provider. Your home number stays with the home SIM and account, while the travel line supplies internet access. On a compatible Dual SIM phone, the two lines can remain installed together. Whether they can both be active depends on the exact phone, regional model and SIM combination. Decide before travel whether you need ordinary calls and SMS on the home number or only internet-based messaging, then check the manufacturer and carrier instructions for that setup.

Choose the travel line for mobile data

Label both lines so you can distinguish Home from Travel. On iPhone, select the travel line under Cellular or Mobile Data, and review the separate default voice-line setting. On Pixel, open Network & Internet, then SIMs, and review the defaults for data, calls and texts. Menu names differ across Android manufacturers. Turn home-line data roaming off and review data switching or data-during-calls options that could move traffic back to the home SIM. After changing settings, verify the selected line with a small mobile-data test.

Keeping SMS available can still involve carrier charges

Receiving a verification text and answering an ordinary phone call are different services with different billing rules. Ask your home carrier about receiving SMS abroad, incoming and outgoing calls, voicemail, Wi-Fi calling and any automatic roaming pass. Turning off data roaming controls mobile data; it does not block every billable voice or messaging event. If you leave the home line active to receive codes, avoid assuming all use is free. Turning the entire home line off provides a clearer separation, but it also removes normal access to that line’s calls and SMS.

Understand what happens to messaging apps

An existing WhatsApp account can use internet supplied by the travel eSIM while retaining its registered number. You do not need to choose the app’s change-number process just because the data connection changes. Keep account recovery details available and avoid reinstalling messaging apps during travel unless necessary, because a fresh sign-in may require verification. iMessage, FaceTime and other services have their own address and activation settings; review those separately. Internet calling also depends on the app, the other participant and local service availability, rather than the travel eSIM including ordinary carrier calls.

Prepare for authentication before you leave

List the services you may need abroad: banking, email, work access and travel bookings. Where supported, set up an authenticator, passkey or recovery method while you still have normal access to your home number. Save official support channels and verify that you can open your eSIM account over Wi-Fi. If a service requires an SMS that you cannot receive, a data-only eSIM cannot manufacture access to your home number. Keep the home account in good standing and choose a setup that matches your actual need for verification messages.
